Today President Obama is meeting with a bipartisan group of Senators to discuss the issue of climate change and energy legislation. Not only is comprehensive legislation essential to creating millions of American jobs and transitioning us towards a new clean energy economy, but bipartisan national security experts also agree that it is a critical national security priority. Such a move by the United States Congress is important for there to be sustainable progress - both domestically and internationally - on carbon reduction. While such legislation would address many of the security concerns expressed by our nation's military and national security experts, extreme conservatives continue to ignore the warnings about this threat and instead insist on "doing nothing." This is not how America will address the twin challenge of climate change and energy security.

Yesterday, the new Director of National Intelligence, Dennis Blair, warned that “the primary near-term security concern of the United States is the global economic crisis and its geopolitical implications.” While Al Qaeda remains the most direct threat to the physical security of the United States, the geopolitical ramifications of the global economic crisis are truly startling. The interconnected nature of the global economy has meant that the current crisis has affected all regions of the world.

This morning, President Bush outlined his domestic legacy during a forum at the American Enterprise Institute. For more than two centuries, much of America's power and influence abroad has come from its domestic strength, specifically the vibrancy of its economy and the respect other countries had for its values. The Bush administration leaves a legacy at home that has greatly weakened US economic competitiveness and moral authority abroad.

The report describes a number of disturbing trends, which could greatly increase the complexity of the international system. However, none of these outcomes are foregone conclusions.

But over the past few years, and especially in this presidential election, progressives have become more assertive in outlining their own vision of national security. Today progressives are speaking about national security with greater confidence than at any time in recent memory and have consistently demonstrated the inadequacy of the conservative world view.
