Major New Project Explores How Americans Form Opinions on National Security Issues

In this election year, American foreign policy-and domestic and international security concerns-are the top issues as voter's weigh their political decisions. Polls show growing public support for cooperative, diplomatic security strategies-and growing skepticism about the ability of military strength and unilateral decision-making to solve complex security problems. With such a unique political climate, the National Security Network aand Demos' US in the World Project collaborated on a project to gauge public opinion on national security and foreign policy issues.Using fifty-one in-depth interviews and extensive reviews of polling data, the findings explore how the American people form their views on America's role in the world--how best to both secure the country and exert American influence abroad.

Letter to Congress Demanding a Sound Counting of Iraqi Civilian Casualties

Despite recent press reports that the GAO will soon report that “while the Baghdad security plan was intended to reduce sectarian violence, U.S. agencies differ on whether such violence has been reduced," and the Associated Press indicates that, “sectarian violence has actually doubled in 2007,” US officials have recently claimed that violence is down and specifically civilian deaths in Iraq have decreased. No evidence has been provided to the public that supports this claim. This assertion follows a bloody month for civilians in Iraq including a bombing that killed more than 400 people and is the deadliest attack of the war.
